Collective bargaining workshop
found helpful by attendees

The January 2nd workday meeting featured Chris Guinther and Ben Simmons.  Members listened to information regarding collective bargaining and the changes that schools were facing because of this landmark decision.
During this information meeting, Guinther discussed the history of this fight for bargaining rights and equality in decision-making.  She also discussed what collective bargaining really means.  She pointed out that collective bargaining is about working to together to make schools better and recognizing that "education experts" need to have that real voice in the making of decisions that affect the students each day.  It is about "local control" and "fairness."  She also pointed out that collective bargaining is not about being extremist or striking.  Strikes remain illegal still.
She pointed out bargaining can include "anything the parties agree to discuss to improve learning and working condition (unless limited by state statutes)."  This could include class size, textbooks, teaching assignments, salary, benefits, discipline policies, time for professional development, and and adequate equipment and supplies.
Simmons discussed the steps to take to begin using collective bargaining.  Employees need to decide who will be recognized as the exclusive bargaining unit in the district.  This can be done in two ways:  voluntary recognition or election refereed by a neutral party.  He also pointed out that "good fences make good neighbors" and collective bargaining makes everyone accountable for decisions made.
Simmons told members that MNEA would be offering training sessions as the year goes on to help prepare members for this new opportunity.
