Qualification Procedures
 

Some of the characteristics of gifted children mentioned on the previous pages can result in problems in the classroom.  These problems don't make the student any "less gifted" but might make working with the student more difficult or cause learning or social difficulties for the student.  Below are some problems that might result from some generalized characteristics.                          

 

 
Gifted... But....
High energy and motivation; interested  in problem solving

*be resistant to drill and repetition (even though there may be gaps in basic skills)

Broad knowledge and interest range                     appear to be a "know-it-all"
Large vocabulary and advanced verbal skills         dominates conversation; escapes into verbalism;
Is independent              rebel against direction or prefer solitude(a "loner"); may not hesitate to express an
opinion even when unpopular
Has high level of conceptualization         not pay much attention to detail
Has intellectual curiosity                be bored with simplistic explanations
Diversity of interests                                        hops from one interest to another; may
not do assignments already known or have
difficulty in organizing or prioritizing work,
papers, and assignments
Pleasure in intellectual tasks                     be impatient with “busy work", anduninterested in assignments already known
Is creative and inventive   reject class content, convergent lessons, or traditions
High level of awareness and sensitivity      be very sensitive to criticism, peer group rejection; may have low self-esteem, be very critical
Analytical and/or critical thinker  be frustrated with inactivity, hypercritical of others; dissects or “picks to pieces”   assignments given in class
